When you do a Google search for “wave table” without the quotes around it, you get a staggering 6,370,000 results. That’s right, the Google database has catalogued over SIX MILLION different web pages about wave tables.

Or so it seems at first.

Actually, MOST of those pages have nothing to do with the Micron Mill Wave Table that we are talking about here at GoldWaveTable.com. Not even remotely close. There’s audio products, furniture, massage tables, and tons more stuff that we don’t want.

Have you ever been frustrated by finding TOO MANY IRRELEVANT results when you use the search engines?

Me too. You scan through the first few pages of results and then you give up.

But here’s good news. You can shortcut your way to exactly what you were looking for. Let me show you…

How to find your kind of wave tables in Google:

(or whatever it is you are searching for – and this method should work similarly in most other search engines, though I confess I haven’t tested it elsewhere).

The trick to speed up your search is to eliminate the irrelevant sites from the search engine results pages BY USING A MINUS SIGN to remove all the pages with those unwanted words on them.

But first of all, put the term you want inside double quote marks. Like this:

“wave tables”

This will eliminate all the pages that have the words wave and tables separated. Such as a page that says “the waiter gave him a nod and a wave then continued to clear the tables”.

Now let’s add some minus sign terms. Like this:

-music

Why music? Because it a key word in the first result — which is a Wikipedia page about the musical kind of wave tables. Adding -music has cut my search results down at a mere 51,600 pages. Still a bit many, eh.

I scan down the first page and see an entry about massage. Yep, massage tables are also irrelevant so I add:

-massage

Each time you add another word with the minus sign immediately before it (no blank space), you cut down on the number of results you get.

So here’s what I finished up in my search box with after adding a load of “minus words”, one at a time:

“wave table” -sound -midi -massage -wavetable -studio -audio -lamp -records -Baccarat -vesper -cloth -wists -desk -french -fountain -tablemat -coastal -clock

This has cut back the original 6 million results to a mere 10,600 but that’s still way too many so it’s time for a new search strategy. Let me tell you about it.

Advanced search:

Right next to the “Search” button at the top of the page, Google has a tiny link marked “Advanced Search”. Click it. This will carry over all our minus words and search terms but additionally it allows us to tell it to find pages that include one or more of certain words we specify.

How do we specify? Use the section labeled “one or more of these words:”

In the 3 boxes it provides, I typed minerals metallurgy mining (one word in each field) because our particular type of wave tables are found in the context of these words.

BINGO. Now we have only 219 pages listed by Google. Great.

Here is the final search string (what I had in the search box):

mineral OR metallurgy OR mining “wave table” -sound -midi -massage -wavetable -studio -audio -lamp -records -Baccarat -vesper -cloth -wists -desk -french -fountain -tablemat -coastal -clock

And in case you’re weird like me and are interested in this sort of thing, here is the URL for the Google search results page from that search:

http://www.google.com.au/search?q=+mineral+OR+metallurgy+OR+mining

+%22wave+table%22+-sound+-midi+-massage+-wavetable+-studio+-audio
+-lamp+-records+-Baccarat+-vesper+-cloth+-wists+-desk+-french
+-fountain+-tablemat+-coastal+-clock&num=20&hl=en&lr=&client=
firefox-a&rls=com.google:en-US:official&as_qdr=all&start=0&sa=N

The result? –> We have found the EXACT thing we were looking for.

In hindsight

Sometimes you only know the best and fastest way to do things after you’ve done it the long way first.

This search would have been much faster if I’d done it right from the start. In other words, if I’d used the “double quotes” method plus the words mining OR mineral. Like this:

“wave table” mining OR mineral

That search takes us directly to pages about wave tables that also include the word mining or mineral.

BINGO. Hole in one.

If you click that link, you’ll see that our site is listed at the top of the results. As the webmaster around here, I did a little happy dance about that, let me tell you!
